Menus

What a visitor can click at the top of the site and in the footer is a menu you built. Nothing is drawn there that you did not put there, and a place with no menu draws nothing at all.

Menu (Menu) is where you build them. Editors and administrators may.

A table of the menu’s Nazwa, the Miejsca it is assigned to (or Nigdzie), how many Pozycje it holds, its Widoczność and when it last changed. Utwórz asks for a name and whether the menu is Widoczne or Ukryte.

A place is one area of the site in one language:

Area Where it is drawn
Nagłówek The row of links at the top of every page; on a phone, inside the menu sheet
Stopka The line of links at the bottom

Where the site speaks more than one language, each area exists once per language: Nagłówek — Polski, Nagłówek — English, and so on.

Miejsca (in the editor’s header) is where you say which menu fills which place. One menu may fill several places, and a place may be left empty — then nothing is drawn there, not even an empty bar.

A language with no menu of its own reads the default language’s. An English header with nothing assigned to it shows the Polish menu rather than nothing, and the site tells a screen reader that those words are in another language. Assign an English menu and it takes over at once.

Two columns. On the right, the things you can add; on the left, the menu itself.

Each picker on the right offers one kind of thing. Tick what you want and press Dodaj do menu:

  • Strony — any published page.
  • Kursy — any published course.
  • Kategorie — a category, which opens the course listing narrowed to it.
  • Własny link — a title and an address you type.
  • Własny tekst — a title with no address. This is how you make a heading that other entries sit under.

Where the site speaks more than one language, the picker tags a page or a course with the language it is written in, so you can tell two translations apart. The visitor never sees that tag: the entry is stored under the record’s own plain name.

An entry that points at a record follows it. Rename the page, move it, and the menu keeps working — it asks the page for its address every time it is drawn. If you unpublish that page, or delete it, or it is written in a language the site no longer serves, the entry quietly stops being drawn. Nothing breaks and nothing has to be tidied up.

A custom link must be a real address: a full https://…, a path starting with /, an anchor like #kontakt, or mailto:…. Anything else is refused with an explanation.

Drag an entry to move it. Wsuń makes it a child of the entry above; Wysuń takes it back out.

A menu is one level deep. A parent with children becomes a drop-down in the header and an indented list in the footer and on a phone. A second level has nowhere to be drawn, so HiLMS refuses it and says so. An entry that already has children cannot itself become a child.

A parent that also has an address of its own keeps it: in the header its own link is the first entry of the panel it opens.

Edytuj on an entry opens its own fields:

  • Tytuł — what the visitor reads. Change it freely; it does not have to match the page’s title.
  • Adres — only for a custom link.
  • Otwiera się w — the same tab, or a new one.
  • Widoczne dla — Wszystkich, Zalogowanych or Niezalogowanych.

Widoczne dla is what puts “Moje kursy” in the header for somebody signed in and “Zaloguj się” for somebody who is not, in one menu.

Usuń removes the entry. Deleting the menu itself is a button in the page header, apart from Save — never beside it.

A menu set to Ukryte is drawn nowhere, whatever places it is assigned to. Use it to prepare a menu before it goes live.

Unless you have already assigned something to a place in that language, a new installation is given two menus per language:

  • a header with the course listing (for everyone) and the students’ page (for whoever is signed in);
  • a footer with the privacy policy and the terms of service.

They point at the starter pages (Pages) and are yours to rewrite. Nothing is ever handed back: a language whose places you have touched is left alone.

If a language has no translations of those pages yet, it gets no menu of its own — and reads the default language’s until you build one.

  • Changes show up at once. HiLMS keeps the drawn menus in a cache and clears it whenever a menu, an entry, a place, a linked page or a language changes.
  • An entry with no address and nothing under it is not drawn, because there would be nothing to click.
  • The entry you are reading is marked for a screen reader, so somebody navigating by keyboard knows where they are.
  • Icons, CSS classes and rel are not offered. The look of a menu belongs to the theme, and rel follows from whether the link opens in a new tab.
